George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin's wedding was "legendary", according to his mother-in-law.

The 53-year-old actor married the 36-year-old British lawyer in a lavish ceremony in Venice, Italy, on Saturday. The pair said their vows at the seven-star Aman Canal Grande Hotel in front of around 100 guests, with her mother Baria overcome with emotion on the day.

"George and Amal radiated love all night," she told People magazine. "The wedding was so unbelievably special, it was legendary. These three days – the friends, the families, the atmosphere, everything – will stay with me all the rest of my life."

The couple exchanged traditional vows and are both now wearing platinum bands. Their ceremony lasted 30 minutes, with People and Hello! magazine obtaining exclusive pictures from the day. Although most are yet to be revealed, People's cover shot shows Amal in her white Oscar de la Renta gown. The dress is an off-the-shoulder number covered in lace, with an A-line skirt and completed with a long veil. It was also hand-embroidered with diamante and pearls. The bride is seen clutching a bouquet of white flowers as she looks coyly towards the ground, with her new groom gazing at her with his hands on her hips.

Four people gave speeches at the reception, among them Baria.

"I said, 'George, we love you truly, deeply and sincerely. We enjoy your charm, your wit, intelligent conversation and generosity. You are simply perfect,'" she explained.

The Hollywood star wore a simple tux for the special day, created by Giorgio Armani. He accessorised with cufflinks, which were a gift from Amal and had 'George' inscribed on them in Arabic.

"[Giorgio is] the class act of all class acts," the actor said. "He's been a good friend for many years and the night wouldn't be complete without him."

The wedding lasted over the whole weekend, ending with the couple's legal ceremony yesterday. George calls Venice the "most romantic city in the world" and explained he and Amal met in Italy and as they have their Lake Como home there, they always knew it would be where they married.

Nora Sagal sang Always at the wedding, which was George's parents' first dance when they tied the knot. The new couple chose Cole Porter track Why Shouldn't I? for theirs.

George's father Nick told guests his son and new wife had shown love was "alive and well" with their wedding, while Amal's friend Jae Kim gushed about how happy the new bride was.

"I had never seen her smile like that," Jae said. "She has had that smile now for almost a year straight!"

Attendees didn't just get to be part of the day - they also went home with gifts including iPods crammed with tracks chosen by the happy couple.
