Anne Hathaway apparently surprised fans by knocking back tequila at a party.

The star joined her husband Adam Shulman at the Sydney Theatre Company’s The Maids closing party at the Viceroy hotel, New York, on Saturday.

She might be known for her good-girl nature, but Anne got into the spirit and reportedly let her hair down for the night.

“Anne and Adam were dancing together throughout the night,” a spy revealed to Page Six. “At one point another partygoer sent Anne a tequila shot, which, to everyone’s surprise, she knocked back.”

The Maids starred fellow Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett and Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber were also A-list attendees at the bash.

She might be the picture of confidence at star-studded parties, but Anne recently revealed her more timid side.

The 31-year-old star was tasked with interviewing Kate Winslet in a video clip for Total Film magazine. Anne proclaimed she was too “shy” to complete the task before quizzing the 38-year-old Titanic star on her favourite breakfast.

“Oh, Annie! She's so sweet. Oh, god, what is my favourite breakfast' My favourite breakfast in the whole wide world, real treaty favourite breakfast, is eggs benedict,” Kate answered.

Anne’s next venture is comedy The Intern, which is due out next year. It focuses on a fashion website that hires an elderly intern.

It will be familiar territory for Anne, who delighted fans in the stylish The Devil Wears Prada back in 2006. In it, she took on the role of a naïve young woman who scores her first job at a glossy fashion magazine.
