Hugh Jackman didn't need to "manipulate himself" for his role in Chappie.

The 46-year-old actor plays opinionated machine designer Vincent Moore in the upcoming action thriller. It's about a police robot which develops emotions after being stolen by criminals who intend to use it to break the law.

Director Neill Blomkamp was determined to cast the Wolverine star for the part and luckily Hugh signed on with no hesitations.

"No, he didn’t take any convincing. It was one of those... I can’t speak about why he took the role, but I always loved the character and I always thought he was such a weird villain, and I loved the idea of him being Australian and that Hugh could just keep his accent," he told comingsoon.net. "It was kind of honest. He didn’t have to manipulate or change himself to fit the character, so I always wanted him. The second that name came up I was like, 'God I hope he does this.' I love working with that guy. I would make a thousand films with him if I could. Such a good dude to have on set."

Some people may compare Chappie to the RoboCop remake which came out last year, starring Joel Kinnaman in the title role. Neill was aware of the unfortunate timing when they began shooting and admits he was bothered by it back then, but he doesn't worry about the association any more.

"Now, time has gone by and that film is gone to me. Because when you watch it, it’s so different from RoboCop, but it’s these elements that are similar that are inescapable," he added.

Chappie also stars Sigourney Weaver and Dev Patel and hits cinemas next month.
