Hugh Jackman: Being a baddie is fun

Hugh Jackman liked playing a villain because it meant he got more time off.

The Australian actor is known to fans around the world for his heroic roles such as Wolverine in X-Men.

However he recently went to the dark side in new flick Chappie, which tells the story of a police robot who can think and feel for himself. Hugh plays ex-soldier and engineer Vincent Moore who sees the thinking robot as the end of mankind.

“It was so much fun [being the baddie]. You think, ‘The hero this...’ You spend the entire movie as the hero being beaten up, right... that’s the hero's journey, you get beaten up. And in the last fight, you get beaten up, big time, but you somehow manage to get through. The villain gets the best dialogue, you’re in half the movie, you get days off, you win every fight except the last one. I’ll take it, any time. And you get a mullet. Heroes never get a mullet!” Hugh laughed to Absolute Radio.

The role required the 46-year-old actor to sport the 90s haircut, which also had to be dyed lighter.

While he’s known for his mane of dark hair, Hugh didn’t mind changing his appearance for the part. However his wife Deborra-Lee Furness wasn’t such a fan of the new look.

“When I met my wife 20 years ago, I had a mullet. It was my very first job and I had a mullet. She’s got a real thing with men with coloured hair, like men who colour their hair. She thinks it’s really unsexy. She thinks it’s impossible to find out a man has dyed his hair and find them sexy. So when I walked in with a mullet, I’m thinking we’re going to flash back to 1995, it’s all going to be on, and she goes, ‘[Dyed] tips? Urgh.’ I said, ‘Not the mullet?’ She goes, ‘Yeah, the mullet, but the tips urgh!’” he recalled.
