Jeffrey Katzenberg wants to be the best when it comes to 3D films.

The DreamWorks Animation CEO is one of the most powerful men in Hollywood and a big advocate of 3D filmmaking. With the release of the company's latest film How to Train Your Dragon 2, Jeffrey believes it was more important than ever to get it right.

"3D is a mixed story that is full of successes and triumphs and also some very disappointing efforts, where it was exploited and devalued in many ways. We continue to strive to be the best at offered top notch 3D. We dove in first and we continue to believe in it," he told the Chicago Sun-Times. "I told the animators making Dragon 2 we have to be to 3D for animation the way Life of Pi was for a live action film. In that case, it wasn’t just the best way to see the movie — it was the only way. I need that to be the case — and I believe it to be true now — for our film as well."

As well as the hurdle of making sure the 3D effects in the film are a triumph, Jeffrey and his team also had to contend with the expectation that comes with a sequel. With the first film earning $500 million worldwide and receiving two Academy Award nominations, producing a sequel that delivers on the same level is a big ask.

"Dean DeBlois, the writer and director of the movie, had laid out at the very outset, what he imagined as a trilogy. So from a story standpoint I think we had a pretty good road map going in here," he explained. "Obviously once a movie is released, you see how it plays, how the audiences respond. But frankly, Dean sort of set a path for this a long, long time ago."
