Jeremy Renner says Kill the Messenger is relevant in today's world.

The American actor stars in the true life tale, which tells the story of journalist Gary Webb and how he became the target of a vicious smear campaign after he exposed the CIA's role in arming rebels and importing cocaine.

Despite being set during the '80s and '90s, Jeremy thinks the subject matter still echoes what goes on in this day and age.

“[But] this is about a real guy whose style I had to learn. A father and husband, which is special to him, but he’s an investigative reporter. It’s relative now. Big media heat today about whistle blowing and truth-seeking. My guy’s job is his life. He’s brave enough — and stupid enough — to slide into dark rabbit holes in search of truth," Jeremy explained to New York Post's Page Six.

“Then comes this amazing man’s shameful, tragic, sad mistreatment. What happens when you ruffle feathers and uncover drug money and what’s illegal. I won’t look for love in Washington with this because you can’t do truth now. You make enemies, not friends."

Jeremy is well known for taking on heroic leads, and has shown off his action-man traits in films such as The Bourne Legacy and The Avengers franchise.

However, the 43-year-old star admits he's totally up for doing more fun films, and says a musical is right up his street.

"I want to. I can. I grew up as a singer. Listen, in the old days James Cagney played tough shoot-’em-up bad guys plus song-and-dance musicals. So, don’t give up on me," he laughed.

“Y’know, I’d love someday to do Broadway, but no time. My workload’s heavy. I haven’t two free weeks on this planet."
