Jon Hamm: I let Cranston give me tips

Jon Hamm is happy to take advice from his Emmys rival Bryan Cranston.

The stars are synonymous with two of the biggest TV shows ever made; Bryan with Breaking Bad and Jon with Mad Men.

At the 2014 Emmy Awards, held in LA on Monday evening, Bryan took home his fourth best actor award - which also marked the fourth time he'd beaten Jon in the prestigious category.

"I know Bryan Cranston well. He’s a wonderful guy and we’ve had similar discussions [about TV shows ending]," Jon smiled to esquire.co.uk. "I talked to him about the end of Breaking Bad and asked how it felt, he said, 'Buddy, you’re going to go through it and it’s going to be a disaster. You just gotta be ready for it and let it happen.'

"I look to Bryan as a role model, he’s so phenomenally talented. He works on great projects. Breaking Bad is glorious but I saw him on stage and in Drive and this and that and he picks good material, so I really do pay attention to what he’s doing. He’s been incredibly kind to me."

In Mad Men, Jon plays slick ad executive Don Draper. The show has amassed a global following but fans will soon be preparing for the end, as the cast are currently filming the seventh and final season.

While Jon is now branching out into movie roles, his not adverse to taking another high-profile TV job. He also gleaned a few words of wisdom from the late James Gandolfini before Mad Men hit the big time.

"I talked to Jimmy – God rest his soul – he was such a wonderful, tremendously talented guy. I spoke to him right at the beginning because The Sopranos ended right when we were just starting and he spoke to me briefly about being a lead, he said, 'This is what you gotta do,'" he remembered.
