Jurassic World chomps box office again

The action-adventure sci-fi based on Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park dinosaur novels took in $54.2 million over the weekend. The picture, which stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Ty Simpkins, Vincent D’Onofrio, BD Wong and Omar Sy, has trumped all competition for three weeks in a row.

Since its debut at American theatres on June 12, Jurassic World has earned $500 million domestically and over $1 billion worldwide, making it the first picture ever to earn $500 million in the US so swiftly. Jurassic World is now the fifth highest grossing film in history, according to CinemaBlend. The feature is just one week away from besting The Dark Knight, the fourth highest grossing film ever with $534 million in earnings. Titanic is in second place at $658 million and Avatar holds the top spot with a $760 million record.

Disney Pixar flick Inside Out secured the second position this weekend, bringing in $52.1 million. The animated family comedy debuted at US theatres on June 19 and since then it has amassed earnings of close to $185 million domestically and $266 million internationally. Made with a budget of $175 million, Inside Out centres on the efforts of five emotions living within 11-year-old girl Riley to make her life experience more pleasurable as she prepares to move away from her childhood home. Amy Poehler, Mindy Kaling, Diane Lane, Bill Hader and Lewis Black all lend their voices to characters in the film.

In third place this week is raunchy comedy Ted 2, which took in $33 million in its debut at the box office. Mark Wahlberg and Amanda Seyfried star in the Seth MacFarlane directed flick, which centres on the efforts of a newlywed couple to get courts to officially recognise their foul-mouthed teddy bear friend as a person with civil rights.
