Kate Winslet hasn’t allowed her children to have iPhones, despite starring in Steve Jobs.
The Academy Award-winner stars in the biopic about the Apple co-founder alongside Michael Fassbender. But despite her new knowledge of technology, the mother-of-three isn’t keen for her children to get too close to the latest gadgets.
“It's a little scary, I think," she told E! News at the movie's New York Film Festival screening. "We become addicted. At the end of the day, it is a part of how we live.”
Kate has 14-year-old daughter Mia from her first marriage to Jim Threapleton and 11-year-old son Joe from her second union with director Sam Mendes. She also has 22-month-old son Bear with third husband Ned Rocknroll and she wants her children to use technology for educational purposes only for as long as possible.
“Certainly in terms of education, I think there is so much done on computers these days... I've had to sort of relent and accept that,” she confessed. “Actually my children's knowledge of computers because of IT classes is much more sophisticated than mine. But do mine have devices? No, they don't."
Kate plays Joanna Hoffman, who worked closely with Steve Jobs during Apple's early years. Regardless of her latest role, the star is insistent that children don’t need to know the ins and outs of gadgets too soon in their young lives.
“I think we have to always be a little careful because they still have to live a life and they still have to climb trees and break their knees and get muddy. That's important,” she added.
Kate was joined by Michael, who takes on the title role, at the screening. The pair enjoyed working together despite the unusual hours they had to carry out their filming.
“We worked some ridiculous hours," she recently told Britain's Esquire. "We filmed in the opera house in the centre of San Francisco, which is a functioning opera house, so we’d start at midnight and film until midday. That’s pretty gross. I remember saying out loud, 'God, I’m so knackered.' And the props woman, who I knew from a couple of other jobs, said, 'Honey, we’re here for a lot longer than you are. Shut the f**k up.' And I went, 'Oh my God, you’re so right.'"
