Kellan Lutz has branded Mel Gibson "a genius".

The two stars appear alongside each other in The Expendable 3, the latest instalment of the action franchise. Mel has been embroiled in scandal over the last few years, following an acrimonious split from his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva. It caused him to take a break from film for a while, but hasn't dampened Kellan's enthusiasm for working with him.

"Mel Gibson. I'm a huge fan of his," he told British magazine Heat, when asked who he was most excited to collaborate with. "He's a genius, a fascinating actor to watch and to act alongside. It was brilliant to ask him questions and get his view. I had a really great time just having scenes with him.

"Outside of that, he is so genuinely nice, just to sit down and talk with. He is very open and willing to talk to everyone and anyone. He treats everyone as equals. It was really great to be able to dive in and ask questions."

Kellan's breakout role came in the Twilight movies, where he played Emmett Cullen. The vampire franchise made household names of the likes of Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner, although Kellan has mixed feelings about it. Looking back, he realises he had no idea it would have such a massive impact on his life.

"They're all different beasts, like with Twilight we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into," he said. "As least with The Expendables it had already built up a fan base. I feel with Twilight it was a bit structured, like, what we could or couldn't say to the press. We were all young and getting caught up in it. However, The Expendables is an action movie with guys who just couldn't care [what the press think]. I am definitely more of an action guy than a romantic drama guy."
