Kerry Washington likes to thank her parents for "getting it on" when it's her birthday.
The actress will turn 38 on January 31 and is a big believer in celebrating the occasion. While she loves getting gifts and is usually treated to something by her mom Valerie and dad Earl, she also likes to reward them on her special day.
"I actually tend to send something to my parents because I feel like – well, now I have to do it too because they're gonna see the show and I gotta overnight it because tomorrow's Friday - but usually I do because I feel like they did all the work; I just came out," she told US talk show host Jimmy Kimmel last night. "And I like to put something inappropriate in the card, like, 'Thanks for getting it on!'"
Adding to Kerry's excitement is that her birthday falls over Super Bowl weekend. It's a major day in the US, as it's the biggest American football event of the year and a real spectacular - Katy Perry is performing during the half-time show this year, with the match taking place in Arizona and Missy Elliott rumoured to be joining her on stage.
"I have the only birthday with a half-time. There have been a couple years where it's been perfect alignment and I feel like the whole nation is partying for me. You can't tell I'm an only child can you?" she laughed.
The star also reminisced about her childhood birthdays. Valerie was big on parties and always turned the event into an extravaganza, although there were some perimeters. She was keen for Kerry's toys to be inclusive; not that the little girl realised.
"As an only child, my mom would always give me a themed party if I wanted one. But it was important to my mother that I had toys that reflected a lot of different cultures. So I had black dolls and brown Barbies and that was important to her, so she was devastated one year when I requested a themed-birthday, but the princess was Snow White," she laughed.
