Kevin Hart has compared the richness of his new comedy Get Hard to the layers of an onion.

The 35-year-old funnyman stars alongside Will Ferrell in the picture, which centres on the relationship between a wealthy millionaire wrongfully convicted of fraud who is preparing for prison and a man who washes cars for a living.

Although Get Hard has received mixed reviews so far, Kevin thinks the storyline is brilliant.

“I love the road to acknowledgement and friendship between the two characters," he told The Hollywood Reporter. "I just love the fact that this movie has so many layers to it. It’s like an onion. Once you peel that onion back, you start to see what it’s really about."

In Get Hard, Will’s wealthy character James mistakenly believes that Kevin’s persona Darnell had been to jail.

And Kevin is happy the feature addresses racism and other prejudicial viewpoints in a hilarious manner.

“Ultimately it’s about making fun of ourselves and making people acknowledge that the stereotypes we set for one another and that we judge people on aren’t really necessary,” Kevin explained. “I think that people get that, ultimately they see this is a dope comedy with a small little message in it.”

Etan Cohen directed Get Hard from a screenplay he wrote with Ian Roberts and Jay Martel.

The comedy has been accused of being racist by some people, but Etan purposefully called attention to stereotypes based on race and class in the script in order to shed light on these issues.

“I think it’s unfortunately something that’s very relevant all the time to all of us,” the filmmaker noted. "It’s obviously one of the biggest issues in the U.S. today, so I think it’s always worth bringing it up to talk about it.”

Get Hard reaches American theatres on Friday.
