Kevin Smith hopes Ben Affleck will star in Mallrats 2 even though chances are “slim”.

The director is currently working on a sequel to his hit 1995 cult classic film Mallrats, a feature about two guys who seek refuge in a mall after being dumped by their girlfriends.

Ben played character Shannon in the original picture and Kevin is really hoping the Academy Award-winning star will make room in his busy schedule for the follow-up.

“I have not reached out to him yet,” Kevin told ComicBook.com. “I am waiting until we have everybody. There’s two more people I want to collect, and that way I have everybody, and I can be like, ‘Come, on dude, even Gil Hicks is back.’

“Now, chances are kind of slim, because he’s Batman now.”

Kevin noted he hasn’t seen Ben, who stars as Bruce Wayne in forthcoming feature Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, in two years because of the star’s extremely successful career.

However, should Ben be at all interested in making an appearance in Mallrats 2, Kevin will ensure he won’t be on set for a lengthy amount of time.

“The good news is that we can do it without him if we have to. The even better news is the piece he would play is not like I would need him for a week, he’s in and out. It would be quick,” he noted.

Kevin revealed most of Mallrats 2 will be shot near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but some scenes will be captured at a mall in Los Angeles for about two days.

The filmmaker joked Ben should sign on to the project because they go way back professionally speaking.

“The storyline allows for a cast of hundreds, including anybody I’ve ever met in genre,” Kevin joked. “We’ll see whether twenty years of history means anything or it’s like, ‘Sorry, I’ve got Gotham City to protect now.’”

Mallrats 2 reaches theatres in 2016.
