Lena Dunham’s mother: She doesn’t need me!

Lena Dunham’s mother Laurie Simmons thinks her daughter deals with pressure “so well”.

The 28-year-old writer, creator and star of hit HBO show Girls became famous in 2013 after receiving two Golden Globe Awards for her work on the programme.

And Lena’s mom Laurie is proud of the way her child is handling the pressures of being in the spotlight, especially when the star receives criticism.

“I would rather have raised a daughter that speaks up than one who doesn’t,”

the matriarch told Page Six. “She takes care of that so well herself, she doesn’t need her mom at this point. She just needs her mom to love her.”

Girls is currently in its fourth season and it’s recently been renewed for a fifth.

But Laurie refuses to leak information on what will happen in future episodes.

“I’ve got some spoiler alerts up my sleeve and unless I have lots of drinks, which is very atypical for me, I’m not sharing,” she smiled.

Lena has previously spoken about how much her mother and father Carroll Dunham, a painter, shaped her personality.

The star credits them with allowing her to find comfort in independence.

“I was given the tools, the space, and the support to do whatever I wanted,” she told Slate magazine. “New approaches to old problems were encouraged.

“My parents taught me that you can have a creative approach to thinking that is almost scientific. You don’t have to be at the mercy of the muse. You need your own internalised thinking process that you can perform again and again.”
