Justin Lin has revealed the official title for Star Trek 3.

The director is currently filming the sci-fi sequel, which stars Zoe Saldana, Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto.

For quite some time now rumours have been circulating Star Trek 3 has officially been dubbed Star Trek Beyond.

And helmer Justin confirmed this hearsay in a message on his Twitter account Monday.

“Let the next Starfleet voyage begin! #StarTrekBeyond #LLAP,” he tweeted.

Attached to the tweet was an image of a costume from the set of Star Trek Beyond. The close-up photograph centred on an insignia which appeared to be part of the Starfleet crews’ uniform.

Star Trek Beyond has been shrouded in secrecy since its inception.

Simon Pegg, who stars in the forthcoming picture as character Scotty, is also co-writing the script with Doug Jung.

And he has recently spoken about what fans can expect to see on-screen in Star Trek Beyond.

“Yes, absolutely,” Simon told the UK’s The Guardian newspaper when asked if there are romantic comedy elements in the film. “Because it’s all about relationships. Myself and Doug Jung, who are writing it together, we’re writing about characters that already exist, so there are pre-existing relationships there, it’s a familial setting. It’s not a romantic comedy exactly, but there are human relationships in it, and that’s what’s at the heart of a romantic comedy, too.”

Star Trek Beyond is due for release in American theatres on July 8, 2016.
