Lindsay Lohan has been pictured leaving police custody with a coat covering her face.

The 26-year-old actress was arrested in the early hours of this morning after getting into an altercation with a woman at a New York City nightclub. It has been alleged the two women exchanged heated words, with Lindsay later punching the lady on the left side of her face.

She was taken into custody and held for several hours, with TMZ reporting she has been booked for third degree misdemeanour assault.

The star was apparently given a desk appearance ticket, which means she will need to go before a judge in connection with the case before too long.

At around 8am local time she was photographed leaving the station with two burly men on either side of her. The star was wearing black tights and a long green suede coat, with a black jacket being held over her face to protect her from camera flashes.

Lindsay's father Michael Lohan has spoken of his horror at his daughter's latest legal skirmish.

He tried to stage an intervention for her recently after becoming concerned she is abusing prescription medication. He has now claimed that Lindsay's latest brush with the law shows that his ex-wife Dina, the star's mother, should have backed him up.

"I told you exactly what would happen and was trying to get Dina on board with me for a long time but especially the last two weeks," he told ET.

"If she had, I wish to God, she would stop and resolve things with us to do the same for our children.

"It's really sad that the same good people, like Gavin [Doyle, Lindsay's assistant], are always there for her and the ones that care are the ones she hurts the most. She is in a dark place, it's in God's hands and I hope he deals with her appropriately."

Michael claims Lindsay's behaviour is a desperate attempt by her to get her parents talking again.

He has repeated his comments on Twitter, in which he begs other parents not to make the mistakes he has.

"Do you see what I mean when our children don't have BOTH parents there for them and on the same page! I have tried and tried but takes two! (sic)," he wrote.

Lindsay's latest arrest comes following claims she will go before a judge in connection with a car crash in June. At the time she said Gavin was driving, but he later clarified that she was behind the wheel. She is currently on probation after pleading no contest to the theft of a necklace and if she is found to have lied to cops that could be revoked.
