(Cover) - EN Movies - Marion Cotillard "empties" her mind to prepare for a role.

The actress' latest venture is Blood Ties, in which she stars alongside Mila Kunis and Zoe Saldana.

The French beauty finds it easiest to get into character by ridding herself of any excess thoughts.

"When I'm working, I empty my mind and I wait to see what the first impression or characteristic is that comes out from the character I have to play," she explained to French magazine Le Figaro.

Marion plays Monica in the gritty drama, which is directed by Guillaume Canet.

She immediately had a sense of what her character would be like.

"The first thing I thought about Monica was that she should be Italian. I asked Guillaume if he was OK with making this change to the character. He said yes and I thought that it would be great if she was speaking Italian," she recalled.

"The problem is that I have a lot of difficulties with the language. I had a bad experience on a film and I've never succeeded in speaking it properly. But for Monica, it was worth it to persevere... And when an Italian journalist congratulated me on my accent, I was amazed!"

Marion previously worked with Guillaume on 2010 film Little White Lies.

The 37-year-old thoroughly enjoyed reuniting with the French director.

"I already loved working with Guillaume in Little White Lies. I love his energy, his passion. He has a great premise to lead actors because he has a great respect for them and gives them all his attention," she gushed.

"I love the way Guillaume is looking for silences, the absence of words. It's quite magical for an actor. Shooting in the US was an experience and very exciting and very strange at the same time. We had to speak in English between us, which we aren't used to. But we were carried by the energy of this adventure. I could do 20 films with Guillaume."

Blood Ties premiered at the Cannes International Film Festival this week.
