Matthew Goode felt “really hopeful” about Robin Wright and her ex.
The English actor is a big fan of Robin, 48, and loves her role of Claire Underwood on hit Netflix series House of Cards. Upon hearing the news that she and her former fiancé Ben Foster, 34, broke up recently, Matthew shared his regret at the situation and admiration for Robin as a woman.
“I love [Ben]! Wait, they broke up? That's really sad. I was really hopeful about that. I liked that whole younger guy with the older woman thing,” he told elle.com.
“But we don't know why they broke up. The age difference probably had nothing to do with it. I really hope it didn't. I actually met her post-Sean [Penn, her ex-husband] when she was dating a friend of mine.
“She's not intimidating at all. She's really lovely. I met her loads of times... You could stick her in a tuxedo and draw a moustache on her or something.”
But it’s not all bad news for Matthew’s friends, as his The Imitation Game co-star Benedict Cumberbatch announced his engagement to Sophie Hunter last month. He and Benedict have known each other for around 15 years, meeting through the Sherlock star's ex-girlfriend Olivia Poulet. But it’s getting tricky for them to spend time together in public now.
“We used to see each other a lot more before he got really big time - and engaged, which is very recent,” Matthew explained. “I can't wait to go back home and hang out in Hampstead and sit in the corner of a pub with him, but [fame] makes it harder and harder these days. So it kind of just ends up being other peoples' houses…”
Matthew added he'd be "shocked" if Benedict wasn't nominated for an Oscar with his portrayal of code-cracker Alan Turing in The Imitation Game.
