Matthew McConaughey loves his career more than ever.

The American actor has been in the spotlight for some time now but it's only in the last two years that his work has caught the attention of critics. Earlier this year he won several accolades for his performance as Ron Woodroof in Dallas Buyers Club, including best actor at the Oscars, Golden Globes and Critics' Choice Awards.

Things haven't stopped there though, and he has moved onto the small screen with his role in HBO series True Detective. He also has Christopher Nolan's sci-fi flick Interstellar coming out next month.

Last night the American Cinematheque held a gala in Matthew's honour and the handsome star couldn't have been more thrilled about the event.

"I went back to work [this year] and did two more films that I'm more excited about than anything I've done," he told ET when asked how he puts this year into perspective. "I'm happy to say that each film I've been doing, the next one turns out to be my most favourite film. And I'm glad that keeps happening... I'm loving my career. I'm loving the work I'm doing more than I ever have in my life."

Matthew also shared how surprised he was to be receiving such a prize at his age. The evening was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, and the actor was joined by his wife Camila Alves and their children, sons Levi and Livingston and daughter Vida.

"Tonight I'm getting honoured for 22 years of my career. And they're saying, 'Hey, we think what you've done made an excellent contribution to the art of cinema.' That's pretty humbling," he added.

"I'm 44, getting this award. If you would have asked me 20 years ago, 'Would that be nice to get that, and if you did when would it be?' I sure probably would have said older than now!"

Also in attendance were some of Matthew’s co-stars, including Fool's Gold’s Kate Hudson. She praised Matthew for being an "amazing actor".
