Melanie Griffith wanted "something crazier" when decorating her New York apartment.

The Working Girl actress has owned the four-bedroom property in the Big Apple since 2004. But after a decade of coming home to a 1940s feel, and following her decision to file for divorce from her husband Antonio Banderas, Melanie felt it was time for something new.

"It was fantastic but I like to change things up," she explained to British magazine Hello! "After ten years, it was time. I wanted something crazier."

With the help of celebrity interior designer Kari Whitman, the 3,400 square foot space was transformed into Old Hollywood glamour with art deco influences and splashes of red. The 56-year-old is thrilled with the result.

"It's elegant and wild at the same time," she added. "It's got more pizzazz."

The scarlet hue begins as soon as you walk through the door and continues through into living room, which features plush red velvet sofas and window seats overlooking the fantastic view of Central Park. The renovation took place gradually over the course of a few months and Melanie's enthusiasm for the project took her by surprise.

"I never thought I would be excited about decorating," she laughed. "When I walked in, I couldn't believe it. It was so beautiful."

Melanie also shared homes in Los Angeles and Aspen with her estranged husband. But city life is where the Golden Globe winner feels happiest.

"I love being in the city, I come as often as I can," she revealed. "For a long time we used to do Thanksgiving here because we could watch the parade and cook everything. There's lots of family so it's nice to have everyone come and chill out. I don't think it's completely finished yet, but it's a happy place."
