Mena Suvari doesn't "buy into" the politics of awards.

The 35-year-old actress is no stranger to the world of ceremonies having been lauded for her role as Angela Hayes in 1999 movie American Beauty, which won a staggering 114 accolades in total following its release.

Mena has since gone on to star in various films and TV shows and with award season currently in full swing, the blonde actress is rooting for a particular star.

"It is an exciting time and it’s always wonderful to be acknowledged for the work you do. But it’s hard for me because I don’t necessarily believe in choosing one (candidate) that’s better than the other. I feel like we all deserve something in our own right, and as far as the politics of it all, I don’t buy into it," she explained to hellomagazine.com.

"I really have enjoyed the films that Reese Witherspoon has been a part of, and what she’s done in this industry. I would love to work with someone like her," she added, referring to Reese's starring in Wild, which she also produced along with Gone Girl.

Mena knows she has been lucky with work so makes sure to give back. The star is regularly active in fighting for female empowerment and has also lent her time to other causes such as Starlight Children's Foundation and Circle of Friends, both of which support young people and kids.

"I've been really blessed with what’s been given to me and so I look at is as, whatever I can do to influence someone else’s life, and make things better, then I should do that," she added. "I’ve been given so much so I like to give back, for whatever its worth.

"Things are going in a fantastic direction. I feel really blessed."

Mena can next be seen in supernatural US TV programme South of Hell as Maria Abascal.
