Mulligan: We’ve all liked bad boys

Carey Mulligan thinks everyone does “naive, silly things” when they are younger.

The British actress will soon be seen in costume drama Far from the Madding Crowd as Bathsheba Everdene. The film is an adaptation of the classic Thomas Hardy novel, but despite the book being released in 1874, Carey thinks her alter ego still strikes a chord with people today.

“I think most people can relate to it [making mistakes while young],” she told the American edition of Elle. “The naïve, silly things you do when you're growing up, when you like the bad boys and you say the wrong things. All of that stuff is pretty relatable.”

Carey was drawn to the role as she was modern character in a Victorian setting. She also liked the fact that she didn’t read like the restrained females that often featured in other works from that time.

“She was a free spirit and impetuous and willful and determined,” she explained. “And I liked that she's a flawed character as well—that she makes mistakes and she's not perfect. She's stubborn and vain, and you can see how she makes all those classic mistakes you make as a girl growing up.”

While Carey didn’t elaborate on the silly errors she made in her own life growing up, she is definitely on the right path with husband, musician Marcus Mumford.

The 29-year-old recently revealed how their successful marriage is down to the fact that they try and keep their relationship as private as possible.

“Marcus is the only thing that’s mine that I can keep totally away, so I try to," she recently told American Vogue.
