Mélanie Laurent has slammed Cannes for becoming "vulgar".

The French actress attended the premiere of film Inside Out as part of the annual festival on Monday, where she stunned in a shimmering golden gown.

While she seemed to be enjoying herself, the star took a moment to reflect on the event and how it has changed over the years.

“I think we are going a bit too crazy,” she admitted to Vanity Fair. “I remember 15 years ago, it was more charming. Less crazy. Less almost vulgar. More respectful.

“But I feel the same way for any other subject in the world.”

Cannes is usually known for premiering very serious dramas, but Inside Out breaks the mould as an animated Disney film about a young girl who struggles with her emotions after moving house.

It stars comedy actresses Amy Poehler and Mindy Kaling, who both graced the red carpet alongside Mélanie for the premiere.

But while Amy may be more known for making people laugh, she was taken aback when a reporter asked whether she was surprised to have a film at Cannes.

"Sure! Yeah, why not," she hit back. "I guess that comedy and drama - [which] this film is such an example of - they live so much together. Comedy makes you feel very big feelings."

Inside Out will start hitting cinemas worldwide in June, but first it will premiere at the Seattle, Sydney and Los Angeles film festivals.
