Naomi Watts has scored a major role in the Divergent sequels.

The Oscar-nominee has been cast as Evelyn in the upcoming instalments of the fantasy franchise. The character is a big part as she is the leader of the Factionless and the estranged mother of Theo James’ Four. Naomi will take up the role in the upcoming sequel Insurgent, as well as in the next two releases in the series, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Divergent is based on the novel by Veronica Roth, which is set in a dystopian society where people are split into groups, or factions, based on their character traits. Tris, portrayed by Shailene Woodley, finds out she is Divergent and so won’t fit into the world. She becomes close to Four, who is a mysterious character, and the pair become hell-bent on discovering the truth about Divergents.

Evelyn is a major role, with the character causing problems for Tris and Four.

Naomi will need to hit the ground running as the sequel has already started filming in Atlanta, with Shailene and Theo both signed on. Kate Winslet is also returning for the sequel, while Octavia Spencer has joined the cast.

Divergent is already doing big business, having taken $267 million worldwide since it hit screens in March.

Shailene’s role in the film series has led to comparisons between her and Jennifer Lawrence, who portrays Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games. While she has balked at them, the star did reach out to Jennifer before taking the role.

"I asked her advice," she previously admitted. "I do think we have things in common. We both believe in having fun and still telling the truth. We're not fashion girls, but we play the game. And we both care deeply about being actors."
