Neve Campbell will be “forever grateful” for Wes Craven’s direction.

The 41-year-old actress starred in hit horror movie Scream and its sequels, which were directed by the late filmmaker. Following his death on Sunday from brain cancer, Neve was quick to pay her respects.

“We lost a great deal of magic yesterday. I’m devastated to hear of Wes’s passing,” she said in a statement on Monday, according to Entertainment Weekly. “My life wouldn’t be what it is without him. I will be forever grateful for his brilliant direction, his wicked sense of humour and his consummate kindness and friendship. He has entertained us all for decades and inspired so many to follow in his path. I loved Wes dearly and will miss him always. Thank you Wes!!!”

As well as the Scream franchise, the legendary filmmaker was behind classic horror hits such as A Nightmare on Elm Street and The Hills Have Eyes. The Hollywood Reporter first reported the news of his passing, after his family announced he had died at the age of 76 in Los Angeles.

Tributes also flocked in from Neve’s Scream co-stars including Courteney Cox and Rose McGowan.

“Today the world lost a great man, my friend and mentor, Wes Craven. My heart goes out to his family. X (sic)” Courteney wrote on Twitter.

Meanwhile director Edgar Wright spoke of how much Wes’ work influenced him growing up.

“I was most saddened to learn of the passing of Wes Craven today. I was a big fan of his films and he was an extremely nice gentleman who I didn’t get to know in person as well as I’d like (sic),” he wrote on his website. “Like many film fans who grew up in the 70’s and early 80’s, Wes Craven’s name became to me synonymous with cutting edge horror. When I grew up in a VHS less house, I really could only dream of the horrors behind the forbidding posters or video box art of movies like The Last House On The Left, The Hills Have Eyes and Deadly Blessing. These were films I was not really allowed to see, but as a young horror obsessive I needed to know everything about them.”
