Noah Baumbach subconsciously draws on the work of Woody Allen.

The American filmmaker, who both writes and directs, is gearing up for the release of his newest flick While We're Young.

The movie tells the story of a childless couple, played by Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts, who befriend a young hipster couple, played by Adam Driver and Amanda Seyfried.

"I grew up on Woody Allen, I don't consciously draw on stuff from his movies as much as I feel I've kind of imbibed Woody Allen," Noah told newsshopper.co.uk.

"With this movie I was thinking about movies of my adolescence that were made, comedies that were made for adults, character driven comedies, and he made obviously a lot of those."

Noah always had Ben in mind for lead character Josh, with the other cast falling into place nicely.

Adam as the young, fun Jamie was also a no brainer for the moviemaker. The 31-year-old Girls star's career is going from strength to strength, with three new films in the pipeline including Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens, due out at the end of the year.

"I felt like casting [Adam] as Jamie made sense in the story, because he's so compelling that I could get away with poking fun at Ben's investment and falling hard for this young couple.

"But I also didn't want to sell Ben out and I wanted the audience to understand why he would fall for this guy, and Adam makes that feel real," Noah explained.

While We're Young starts hitting cinemas from March 27.
