Rashida Jones created her own opportunities.
The American actress may be the daughter of music legend Quincy Jones but found breaking into the industry a hard task. However, with shows such as The Office and Parks and Recreation under her belt she has become one of the most recognisable faces on TV.
Talking at Marie Claire's annual lunch devoted to powerful women held in New York yesterday, Rashida touched upon the continuing inequality between women and men in power.
“I realised I wasn’t going to get any further by waiting for other people to create opportunities for me.
“If there’s money to be made, people will embrace gender equality. Americans love money,” Rashida added with a smile.
The 38-year-old also features in the pages of this month's Marie Claire, with accompanying photos that see her perching on a desk and driving around in a golf buggy.
Proving gender differences are on her mind at the moment, the brunette beauty admitted Hollywood could be tough on its leading ladies.
"As an actor, you're kind of at the bottom of the pile. You rely on everybody else to allow you to do what you do. The business is tough on women. I don't want to think of the way I look as some commodity that's slipping away," she explained.
With her own A-list status now cemented, Rashida reflected on her struggle to get to the top and concedes she's glad success wasn't instant.
Her latest project is new series Angie Tribeca created by Steve Carell, which hits the small screen next year.
"I wanted to be noticed, I wanted to be respected, and I felt jealous when other people had the opportunity. But I'm so happy that it took so long for anybody to really give me a long-term job, because it made me appreciate what it's like to be an out-of-work actor," she confessed.
