(Cover) - EN Movies - Keanu Reeves’ and Reese Witherspoon’s forthcoming sci-fi romance Passengers has been acquired by The Weinstein Company.

Keanu is credited with developing the futuristic feature-length film. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Weinstein has purchased US rights while the project was being shopped around at the Cannes International Film Festival.

The firm has reportedly committed to spending at least $25 million on marketing the Wayfare Entertainment-financed project.

Passengers focuses on the love story between Keanu and Reese’s characters after they meet on a human cargo star ship.

When the spacecraft suffers a misfire, Keanu’s character is awoken from slumber. His cryogenic transporter device opened up almost a century before the other passengers’ due to the malfunction. Lonely, he decides to wake up a female rider to keep him company.

Keanu will serve as producer, alongside Stephen Hamel and Wayfare’s Ben Browning. Michael Maher and Lynwood Spinks will serve as executive producers.

The drama will mark Game of Thrones helmer Brian Kirk’s feature directorial debut.

According to THR, Exclusive Media is pitching the film to foreign buyers at Cannes.

Passengers is currently in development.
