Rivers' loved ones ‘shocked’

Joan Rivers’ condition apparently remains “serious” amid reports doctors are bringing her out of an induced coma.

The Fashion Police comedienne, 81, was hospitalised last Thursday after she apparently stopped breathing while undergoing a throat procedure at a New York City clinic.

Sources on Sunday told the New York Daily News Joan’s condition had improved enough to allow doctors to begin the process of bringing her back to consciousness.

But new reports suggest those close to her are still trying to come to grips with her recent health woes.

"Everyone is shocked that this happened,” a source told US Weekly, adding cautiously: “She's a strong woman, people aren't giving up hope, but it's very serious right now.”

Joan’s process of returning to consciousness is meanwhile expected to take until Tuesday, according to the Daily News, with doctors reportedly unsure of how she will respond.

"There is real concern that the part of the brain that controls motor skills may have been compromised, leaving her as either a vegetable or in a wheelchair,” the insider said at the weekend.

A spokesperson for the star had not commented on the claims at press time.

The report follows a day after Joan’s daughter, Melissa Rivers, revealed relatives were still hopeful about her mother’s progress.

“We are keeping our fingers crossed,” she told the Associated Press.

Melissa previously said family members have been moved by the outpouring of love and support for the comedy legend.

“My mother would be so touched by the tributes and prayers that we have received from around the world. We ask that you continue to keep her in your thoughts as we pray for her recovery,” she told E! News.
