(Cover) - EN Movies - Ron Howard says independent cinema is the “foundation” of the movie industry.

The director has made several big budget films such as The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons.

However, Ron insisted that the heart of cinema is in the smaller pictures.

“It is important to support all independent cinema all around the world,” he told Cover Media.

“It’s tougher than ever to raise the money and find the audiences and cut through all the video games and internet and cut through all of it. Particularly movies that don’t have the big advertising budgets - and yet I think independent cinema is always the foundation for everything else.”

The star was speaking at the 2011 British Independent Film Awards in London, where he presented an award.

He believes it is important to acknowledge upcoming artists and see who is going to break in to the mainstream.

“You’ve got to celebrate it and get to the festivals and get people to see what is on the horizon,” he smiled.
