Rose Byrne has learnt there is no room for "excessive humility" in her job.

The 35-year-old actress has been in the industry since she was 13, but only became well known over the last few years - in part thanks to her role in hit comedy Bridesmaids in 2011. She was quizzed on why it's taken her carer so long to soar, and is in no doubt that she held herself back.

"It's been partly my own fault. Earlier in my career, I constantly underestimated myself. I think it's a very Australian characteristic in that God forbid we take ourselves too seriously or allow ourselves to feel too important," she told British magazine Hello! "But excessive humility is not going to take you very far in this business. I had to learn to have more confidence in myself and be proud of what I do. Now I feel I'm ready to take on anything."

That doesn't mean the star is comfortable with everything which comes with fame though. She still doesn't particularly like being recognised when she is out and about, something she's had to get used to. Although it doesn't happen that much, dating Boardwalk Empire's Bobby Cannavale has made it happen a lot more.

"Bobby gets noticed a lot more than me because he's pretty hard to miss. I can usually pass unnoticed if I'm on my own and that's fine with me. I'm still kind of shy and so I love having Bobby with me," she said.

The couple couldn't be happier together, which is one of the reasons Bobby wasn't sure about starring alongside her in upcoming movie Spy. It's about a desk-bound CIA analyst who decides to go undercover to try to crack a case, and Rose is fully aware it could have made her romance tricky. Luckily she and Bobby relished the chance to have more time together and didn't fall out on set, with the Australian actress only too happy to gush about him.

"He's this very kind-hearted, wonderful guy. I'm very lucky to have met him," she smiled.
