Rupert Grint has a “fear of scissors” after his mother gave him a “nightmare” haircut.
The 26-year-old actor has bright red locks which he was asked to keep messy while he starred in the Harry Potter movies. He didn’t mind that too much, although he would get rid of the fourth instalment, Goblet of Fire, if he could, because he hates the long locks he was rocking at the time.
When the series wrapped, Rupert decided to have a makeover - but it didn’t go to plan.
“Not really, no. Hang on – actually, yeah!” he told British newspaper The Guardian when asked if he decided to control his hair after it finished. “One time. I let my mum cut my hair after the last Harry Potter film. She kind of dabbles in hairdressing. And it ended up being a total nightmare. She just kept trying to make it even and symmetrical but, in doing that, she kind of cut all my hair into a really weird shape. Ever since then, I’ve had a fear of scissors.”
At the moment Rupert is in New York City, appearing in Broadway show It’s Only a Play. He misses home, but has taken some steps to feel more settled in the Big Apple. Among those are getting a pet; a male tortoise called Madeline.
“I named him before I found out his gender,” Rupert explained. “The best thing is that you don’t really need to do anything with him. He doesn’t even need water that often. Doesn’t like to be touched either.”
Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick and Stockard Channing are among Rupert’s co-stars. Appearing alongside such big names has been a learning curve for him; especially as members of the audience always cheer when their favourite star comes on stage.
“Yeah. Though it’s more hesitant,” he admitted, when asked if he ever gets a clap. “It’s not instant like with Nathan or Stockard. There’s a bit of a delay. A ripple effect.”
