Russell Crowe has been left “stunned” by the death of A Beautiful Mind mathematician John Nash.

The 86-year-old and his wife Alicia, 82, were tragically killed yesterday in a car crash. He inspired the 2001 film A Beautiful Mind, in which Russell took the lead.

The actor has now taken to Twitter to share his condolences and shock at the news.

“Stunned...my heart goes out to John & Alicia & family. An amazing partnership. Beautiful minds, beautiful hearts. (sic),” he wrote.

Jennifer Connelly, who played Alicia, has also spoken out.

“This is a great loss. John and Alicia Nash were an inspiration and I have deep admiration for all that they accomplished in their lives,” she said in a statement to JustJared.com. “My thoughts are with their family.”

Ron Howard directed the film, which scooped four Oscars. He also took to Twitter to share his sadness.

“RIP Brilliant #NobelPrize winning John Nash & and his remarkable wife Alicia. It was an honor telling part of their story #ABeautifulMind (sic),” he posted.

Police have revealed the couple died when their taxi crashed in New Jersey.

John was renowned for his work in game theory and won the Nobel Prize for Economics in 1994.
