Ryan Gosling credits acting for giving him confidence.

The actor has been in the movie business for many years now, impressing in romantic hit The Notebook back in 2004 and going on to star in films such as Drive and Crazy, Stupid, Love.

He started his career very early, soaking up the limelight alongside Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears in the Mickey Mouse Club. But it was acting that made him into who he is today.

"I wasn't very good at singing and dancing, which really frustrated me for a while," he admitted to German magazine Maxi.

"That's why I tried some serious acting, which luckily worked out pretty well. Alongside that, it was good for my confidence. I was able to hide behind characters and still, secretly, reveal things about myself. I still enjoy that aspect today."

Ryan, 34, is in a high-profile relationship with 41-year-old Eva Mendes and they have daughter Esmeralda together. It's not surprising their union gets plenty of attention, but Ryan would rather play his cards close to his chest.

"I'm just a shy person," he shrugged. "And I like flying under the radar. I've never been interested in all this Hollywood glamour. It's far too shallow and fake. I'd much rather spend time with my family or friends. Or by myself. I think it's very important to take some time for yourself. I play guitar, watch old Hollywood movies and just have a bit of a daydream.
