Sandra Bullock is said to be nervous and excited about her new romance.

The 50-year-old actress is rumoured to be dating comedian Michael McDonald, who co-starred in her 2013 movie The Heat. The pair were seen snuggling up at Mardi Gras celebrations in New Orleans earlier this month, with her pals including Chelsea Handler looking on.

"It's early days, but Sandra is so happy," an insider told the US edition of OK! magazine. "She's such a private person, so showing off her romance in front of friends says a lot about what Michael must mean to her. Even though she's nervous about where this might go, she's excited more than anything."

Sandra and Michael, 50, have apparently known each other for years and enjoyed a friendship too. But recently things took a romantic twist, which is thought to have come as a surprise.

The Oscar-winning star has been single since she split from her ex-husband Jesse James in 2010, following revelations that he'd been unfaithful with multiple women.

Their break-up came as they were in the process of adopting a child and Sandra continued that alone, making her mother to Louis, now five.

All of this is said to have made her wary of relationships, so she is taking things with Michael slowly.

"Not surprisingly, Sandra has had plenty of trust issues since the whole Jesse debacle," the insider said. "But she trusts Michael implicitly. She's finally started to realise he's much more than just a friend."

The actress prefers to keep her personal life private, but has touched on romance in the past. In 2013 she insisted she wasn't looking for a relationship as she wanted to make Louis the centre of her world.

"He's still very young and one day things could change, but right now we have a very busy schedule full of important things to do, like swim class from three to four. And then feeding him takes hours, so by the end of the day, around eight, you wouldn't want to go out with me anyway because I'm a mess!" she laughed to theage.com.au.

"But when that all calms down, who knows what could happen?"
