Scarlett Johansson says she feels a link to the Black Widow because of her depth.

The 30-year-old actress takes on the role once again in the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron.

And opening up about the reasons behind her decision to return to the part of the Black Widow, also known as Natasha Romanoff, Scarlett said she felt a connection to her alter ego on a deeper level.

“What’s great about playing this character is that she's based in something deep and something that I can hold onto,” Scarlett told MailOnline.

“She's grounded and very real; she has experienced a lot of trauma and never been able to make active choices for herself and now she finally is, and she's ready for it but unfortunately, it's bad timing.”

The stunning actress also said that the depth of her character makes the incredibly gruelling schedules involved in shooting such a blockbuster movie easier to deal with.

“These types of things are something we can hold onto and when we're fighting the good fight and shooting five days to the page over two weeks it keeps us involved and keeps our heads straight,” she said.

Scarlett has had a varied career in her 30 years, starring in everything from low budget, independent films like Under the Skin to big budget blockbusters such as Iron Man 2 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Revealing her decision making process for choosing which films to appear in, Scarlett said she has a strict list of criteria that the movies must abide by.

“I'm looking for [scripts] as an actor looking for material that's substantial, not a female actor looking for substantial work,” she said.
