Scarlett Johansson's mother-in-law is constantly asking if her French has improved yet.

The Hollywood star is married to French journalist Romain Dauriac and they live in Paris with their eight-month-old daughter Rose.

According to the 30-year-old, there's a bit of well-meant pressure from Romain's family to get fully immersed in life away from America.

"Every time I see my mother-in-law, she asks how good my French is now," she laughed to German magazine TV Movie. "But it's not looking good; I'm barely making progress..."

The actress is probably too busy for language lessons, what with looking after Rose and promoting her new film Avengers: Age of Ultron. Since the little one was born last year, things have changed hugely for Scarlett and her beau.

"Children change your life in a wonderful way," she gushed. "My life has been turned upside down since Rose arrived, but I'm so happy."

The star reasons she can't give any tips for other new mothers, as she's still "learning every day".

Luckily she was raised by a strong woman who taught her lots of important life lessons she will no doubt pass on to her own daughter.

"She always believed in me and encouraged me to follow my dreams," she smiled. "I am very grateful to her, for everything."

And following her dreams is just what Scarlett is doing, with roles in Hail, Caesar! and The Jungle Book coming up next year.
