Sofía Vergara felt even more compelled to support the Angel Ball after suffering from cancer.

Charity Gabrielle's Angel Foundation hosts the event annually, with many stars heading to New York to show their face last night.

Among them was the Modern Family star, who was diagnosed with the disease at the age of 28.

"I had thyroid cancer some years ago," the 42-year-old explained to ET Online. "But it's not only because of that. [Cancer] is such a horrible sickness that we all should help anyways, even if you have never had it."

The illness resulted in Sofía having her thyroid removed and she is now clear of the disease. However, it's thought she still takes daily doses of medication to control hypothyroidism.

Luckily, the actress has her Modern Family co-stars to rely on, saying they are like "family".

Gabrielle's Angel Foundation was set up by Grammy-nominated songwriter and philanthropist, Denise Rich, whose daughter Gabrielle succumbed to the disease aged 27 in 1996.

Others showing their support for the charity last night included Paris and Nicky Hilton, Kris Jenner and Jamie Foxx. Sofía's ex Nick Loeb was also there, and the actress was subjected to an embarrassing moment when her former fiancé apparently snuck up to her on the red carpet without her realising.

"Sofia totally gave Nick the cold shoulder," an insider told Us Weekly of the star, who is now dating Joe Manganiello.

Sofía, who has 22-year-old son Manolo with her ex-husband Joe Gonzalez, previously opened up about her cancer diagnosis.

“I’ve never done drugs or smoked. And I don’t eat red meat,” she said at the time. “I felt totally healthy, and suddenly they tell me I have cancer? I was scared. I immediately thought of my child.”
