Stars have bid farewell to American television icon David Letterman.
The 68-year-old comedian has been a late night TV star since 1980 and in April he announced his retirement from the small screen.
David interviewed countless celebrities on his beloved CBS broadcast Late Show over the past 22 years and many of Hollywood’s biggest stars have taken to social media to express their gratitude for him.
“Tonight is David @Letterman’s final show. What a wonderful, inspiring, hilarious, groundbreaking, amazing ride. #ThanksDave (sic),” comedienne Ellen DeGeneres, who currently hosts daytime talk programme The Ellen DeGeneres Show wrote on Twitter Wednesday night.
David’s hosting duties are officially over after the airing of the May 20th episode.
Academy Award-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence does not want to see him go. The 24-year-old Silver Linings Playbook star posted a sweet image of herself on her Facebook page in which she was featured holding a note written from her to David, with the letter reading: “Don’t do this! No one is sick of you it’s all in your head”.
Many fellow comedians also wished David luck in his retirement.
However, some of his funny colleagues expressed grief over not seeing him on TV anymore.
“Gonna miss this man something awful. #DAVE,” Sarah Silverman tweeted.
Canadian comic Tom Green wrote a thoughtful goodbye to David on Facebook. In the post, the 43-year-old Freddy Got Fingered star shared a link to an interview he did with Winnipeg Free Press, with the headline reading: Tom Green recalls filling in for his ‘hero’ on ‘Late Show with David Letterman’.
“David Letterman was a revolutionary and still one of my biggest heroes. I thank him for all the years he spent making us laugh,” Tom wrote online.
In the final Late Show monologue, David went out with a bang, delivering hilarious jokes in typical fashion.
“It’s beginning to look like I’m not going to get The Tonight Show,” he said.
“Stephen Hawking added it up, and in 33 years there’s been eight minutes of comedy. Next month Paul and I will be debuting our new act in Las Vegas with our white tigers. Now when I screw up, I will have to go on someone else’s show to apologise.”
