(Cover) - EN Movies - Todd Haynes will direct Cate Blanchett once again in forthcoming romantic drama Carol.

The filmmaker and the actress both received Oscar nominations for their work on his 2007 Bob Dylan biopic I’m Not There.

Screen Daily reports the pair will reunite in Carol, which is based on American author Patricia Highsmith’s 1952 novel The Price of Salt.

Highsmith’s revolutionary tome centres on the romance between two women in 1950s New York City. The lesbian story ended happily, which was unprecedented at the time.

In Carol, Cate will portray an unhappy wealthy woman in a loveless marriage. Mia is a young girl in her twenties who works at a department store, but has big dreams for her future. The pair strike up a strong relationship with one another.

Elizabeth Karlsen will lead production with Stephen Woolley and Christine Vachon.

Elizabeth can’t wait to begin filming.

“Todd is without a doubt one of the most talented directors working today,” she gushed to the website.

“His attachment to direct this script and cast is a dream come true.”

Film4 will finance the project with HanWay taking on sales.

Playwright Phyllis Nagy will adapt Highsmith’s story to screen.

Jon Crowley was originally going to direct Carol, but dropped out of the project due to scheduling conflicts.
