Tom Felton struggled with his calorie-controlled diet for Against the Sun.

The 27-year-old actor, most well known for playing Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter film franchise, had to lose weight to star in the shipwreck movie.

But Tom admits he found it tough to stick to such a restricted diet.

“I didn’t really foresee it being as difficult as it was,” Tom told JustJared.com. “I’m a really big eater. So I thought, it’s OK, I’ll skip a few meals. But they give you like 500 calories a day, and you eat every two hours, on the nose, and they give you like seven almonds or half a broccoli stick. So in a couple days, your metabolism is really fired up and desperate for anything.”

Tom also revealed that prior to taking on the movie, he didn’t realise that drinks had calories in them too.

It wasn’t until he was caught enjoying a few beers that his nutritionist stepped in.

“I didn’t realise as well the calories were taken through liquid as well,” he said. “The nutritionist came to my hotel room the second day and saw empty beer cans. I was like, ‘What? I didn’t eat anything.’ He was like, ‘Those are about 150 calories a can!’ And I was like, oh s**t. So yeah, that sucked. I didn’t realise coffee was basically all milk. It’s like 380 calories – a whole day’s calories in a coffee. It was tough, but it was three weeks.”

In the film, available to buy or rent on iTunes, Tom plays a US Navy airman who, along with two comrades, gets stranded on a raft at sea.

And Tom added that while the diet aspect of the film was difficult to cope with, there were other parts of his character that he enjoyed immensely.

“My inner child was pleased to hold my character’s gun,” he said. “I actually have a piece of the raft framed, and I put it in my office.”
