Tom Hanks: You love your kids unconditionally

Tom Hanks believes it is imperative for parents to support their children “every step of the way”.

The two-time Oscar winner spoke out in the wake of his son Chet Hanks opening up about his battle for sobriety. The 25-year-old posted a series of Instagram videos last week (ends02Oct15) to discuss his visit to rehab to deal with drug abuse. For Tom, 59, he couldn’t be prouder of his boy for facing his demons.

“As a parent, you love your kids unconditionally," he told ET Online. "You support them every step of the way. You got to applaud the bravery and honesty when it actually comes out of your own house.”

Chet is the eldest son of Tom and wife Rita Wilson, who are also parents to son Truman. In addition to his children with Rita, the Forrest Gump star is father to son Colin and daughter Elizabeth from his first marriage to Samantha Lewes.

Chet headed down the wrong path, getting into drugs including crack cocaine. But in his run of emotional videos on Wednesday (30Sept15), Chet revealed he had managed to clean up his act.

“I've been in rehab. I've been trying to get my s**t together, and I'm doing pretty damn good,” he said in one video. “I just really had to take a look at myself and my life and the way s**t was going and all the crazy stupid s**t I was doing and just finally admit to myself that it wasn't working.”

Chet added he had been selling coke as well as using it and was doing so much that he struggled to snort it as his nose was so clogged up.

"I only say this to show y'all how real it is, not to glorify anything I've done," he captioned one video. "There's nothing glorious about bringing yourself closer to death and prison with each day of active addiction."
