Tom Hiddleston believes the “opposite forces of sex and death” are strong in humans.

The 34-year-old actor is currently at Comic-Con International promoting his new feature Crimson Peak, a Gothic romance horror movie directed by Guillermo del Toro which is set during the 19th century in England.

Tom thinks the movie is so appealing because the content taps into the primal nature of human beings.

"There's something about these opposite forces of sex and death in all of our lives,” he explained to GamesRadar+. “They are inevitable and they are everywhere, and they war. They come to battle each other in Gothic romance.

“So there is this very strong, sharp romantic instinct that propels two people together and a sexuality that becomes of that, but also the prospect of a death… it seems to be very contradictory opposites in our lives and I think Gothic romance holds those two in a very beautiful way. It’s one that I know fascinates me.”

Tom is notoriously quiet about his love life and it is unknown whether he is currently in a relationship.

However, in a previous interview he was more than happy to discuss his thoughts on how to treat a woman.

Having grown up with an older and younger sister, the handsome star looks to his siblings’ and mother's traits as a starting point.

"I believe in the strength and intelligence and sensitivity of women. My mother, my sisters [they] are strong. My mum is a strong woman and I love her for it," he smiled to British magazine ELLE.

Crimson Peak, which also stars Jessica Chastain and Charlie Hunnam, reaches US theatres October 16.
