Tom Holland is set to star in Lost City of Z.

The 19-year-old actor will share the screen with high-profile thespians including Robert Pattinson, Sienna Miller and Charlie Hunnam in the upcoming film, which is directed by James Gray.

The role is the latest stellar move for Tom, who was a relative unknown before being announced as the newest actor to take on the role of Spider-Man.

Production on Lost City of Z has already began in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

The film tells the story of Percy Fawcett, a soldier turned explorer who disappeared in Brazil in the 1920s while looking for a mythical city.

Tom’s role in the movie has yet to be revealed.

Prior to landing the part of Spidey, Tom was perhaps most recognised for his part in miniseries Wolf Hall and in disaster movie The Impossible.

And it was his performance in the latter that convinced Andrew Garfield, who played the superhero in The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, that Tom was the perfect person to pick up where he left off.

"It feels lovely, especially because Tom Holland is a really, really great actor. He was in this movie The Impossible and he was just this incredibly powerful, sensitive, just wonderful young actor," he told ET.

"And [he's] a dancer, so his body’s the right [form]. I’m just really excited to just be a fan again as opposed to bearing the weight of it."

It is believed the studios desired to replace Andrew in the role because they wanted a fresh face to take on Spider-Man amid rumours the character is set to make an appearance in an upcoming assemble movie such as the Avengers.
