Vanessa Hudgens has urged her fans to take cloth bags to the grocery store.

The 25-year-old star is passionate about the environment and proved this by attending the Gorgeous & Green Gala in San Francisco earlier this month.

She looked stunning in an emerald Diane von Furstenberg dress and spoke out to her fans about saving the planet.

"Make sure they bring bags to the grocery store," she told popsugar.com when asked the one 'green' thing she would advise people do.

"We banned plastic bags, which is amazing because there's nothing we can do with those. [They end up] in a landfill."

Also at the event was Goldie Hawn, who wore a green dress lent to her by her daughter Kate Hudson. The 68-year-old actress is a favourite of Vanessa's and she shared her favourite Goldie movie is Death Becomes Her, also starring Meryl Streep.

"It's such a classic and the two [actresses] together... it doesn't get any better! She was so fabulous," Vanessa gushed.

The former High School Musical star is expanding her career by treading the boards on Broadway in Gigi, which will kick off in January next year.

"I'm terrified - but do the things that scare you though!" she grinned. "I love Gigi, she's so adorable - it's so much fun, I'm stoked!"

Howard McGillin, Corey Cott and Steffanie Leigh will join Vanessa on stage in the musical, which runs for just under a month.
