Zach Braff wants people to get "goosebumps" while watching his new film.

The 39-year-old actor returns as director with his latest movie Wish I Was Here, in which he also plays struggling actor Aidan Bloom. Co-written by Zach and his brother Adam, the film follows the lead character's life as he goes through a journey of self-discovery with his family.

A range of feelings are triggered throughout the feature, and the star experienced them even more due to being behind the camera.

"When you're the director and you're watching a monitor, you're looking for the emotions that you want the audience to have," he explained to Cover Media. "So of course you're going to be laughing when something is funny and when an emotional moment happens you want to feel goosebumps or your eyes well, because it's a visual response you're looking for and that's what you want the audience to have."

The film boasts big names alongside Zach, including Kate Hudson, Joey King and Mandy Patinkin. Describing what makes his movie stand out from other comedy-dramas, the actor believes his being a small production - which was made possible due to a Kickstarter campaign - gave him more freedom.

"I think a lot of films out there are versions of something you've seen before and they can still be wonderful and hilarious and beautiful, but they are a version that you've seen before. That's how they got made, because Hollywood only makes something that's been written before," he added. "Any time there's innovation in any way it comes from someone doing something small and different. I'm not by any means reinventing the wheel, I'm inspired by Woody Allen and Hal Ashby and people that I look up to, but I will say that I think this is different."
