Laura Dern thinks the level of compassion in The Fault in Our Stars is "beautiful".

The 47-year-old stars in the romantic comedy-drama as the mother of a 16-year-old girl who has cancer. For Laura, the way the characters are written just blew her away.

"It's incredible that he [author John Green] has written three primary teenage characters all who share a diagnosis and yet are considering the other person," she told HeyUGuys.co.uk. "The level of compassion and the level of longing to help the other is so beautiful and palpable in this story and it's a great thing for all of us to consider, not only the value of the moment but the value of looking out for others regardless of what we are walking through. That our daughter is more worried about if we're going to be ok when she dies than anything in her life it's so moving."

Laura has had an amazing and varied career, having starred in films including I Am Sam and Jurassic Park. But she always enjoys working with new actors who at their start of their own career, and this film was no exception.

"Shai [Woodley] and Ansel [Elgort] and Nat [Wolff] are amazing people, kind and it’s funny, Ansel I knew the least and is very new in his career but we all share a similar taste," she explained. "Which regardless of how you choose to cast a film you don't choose to cast on the career of the person. But interestingly they chose actors who make dark comedies or movies with irreverent voices so we all had a similar longing to find the humour in the dark places."
