Kellan Lutz's The Expendables 3 character is a bit of a "drama queen".

The 29-year-old makes his entrance into the franchise with his role as John Smilee in the latest instalment, joining the likes of original cast Sylvester Stallone and Dolph Lundgren. Little is revealed of his alter ego's story, only that he is a motorcycle pro, but Kellan insists there is more to the character than what is seen in the movie.

"You never really see a young Barney [Ross, played by Sylvester,] and there's essence of who John is and how he becomes..." Kellan said to Cover Media during a press conference in London to promote the movie. "Throughout the journey of the script and potentially [in films] four, five, six through ten, you'll see [John] open up a bit more. My character doesn't smile, he has a lot of weight on his shoulders from his past and Barney Ross gets in there. He's one of the few who can actually get in there. So my character is more of a drama queen. But he'll open up, he will."

Another newbie to the action series is Antonio Banderas, whose funny portrayal of Galgo gets giggles out of the audience. The Spanish actor took advantage of his contribution to the overall feel of the feature, despite his co-stars' reactions.

"I brought comedy," Antonio smiled. "This guy became kind of a compulsive talker, a weapon of mass destruction of talking. When I saw my fellow actors rolling eyes, I said, 'Yes, I'm there'. Basically, every scene I provoke some laughter."

Sylvester has been massively involved with all three Expendables movies, directing the first and demonstrating his writing skills in all three. He thought the franchise would draw in a larger audience with new faces this time around.

"I felt we needed to upgrade and re-cool, and bring actors that are known for their physicality but they're also very dramatic actors, nominated actors, actors that have done films almost in every genre," Sylvester added.
