Lindsay Lohan says being put in solitary confinement alongside murderers was a “jarring” experience.

The 28-year-old actress spent 14 days of a 90-day sentence in prison in 2010 after a judge ruled she’d violated the terms of her DUI probation by missing mandatory classes and meetings. She was segregated while inside and has spoken about how hard she found it.

“Solitary confinement is actually very different, you leave your cell for one hour a day and you don’t go outside,” she told British talk show host Jonathan Ross.

“'I don’t think anyone knows that but the other girls in the other cells were in there for murder… They [the Prison Officers] said it was for ‘safety purposes’, I said, ‘What am I going to do?’ I made a mistake, I went to a club and then I drank and I drove home and that’s not the right thing to do but to put someone in that position, it was very scary, it was very jarring.”

Although the star had brushes with the law after her release, she maintains it did make her think about her life. For one thing, she had time to think about the path she was heading down, away from her friends and family.

“The weirdest part for me was I finally had silence in my life,” she said.

“As terrified as I was and as scared as I was, I finally felt like I didn’t have to answer to anyone and I didn’t have to do anything for anyone. That was the weirdest part of it.”

That’s not to say that the star thinks her sentence was fair though. “Two days would have been enough,” she insisted.

Lindsay was also sentenced to 90 days in rehab, which she served 23 days of after she was released from jail due to overcrowding.

Those stints didn’t curb her issues and she went on to appear in court again – she was accused of stealing a necklace – and being court-ordered to more rehab time. Lindsay was released last year and has kept out of trouble since. She’s now focusing on her career and is currently performing in a production of Speed-the-Plow in London, UK.
