Jada Pinkett Smith: I make my own choices

Jada Pinkett Smith's career choices have never been influenced by her husband Will.

The 43-year-old actress is currently gracing TV screens as Fish Mooney in new show Gotham. She's also had a successful film career with movies such as Collateral and Madagascar.

Being married to Will means their house is a creative one, though Jada never turns to him for acting advice.

"Will and I are creative entities; he hasn't really had influence on my career per se, but we do love to create together. And being two artists that share a household means it is just constant creation. Which is probably why my kids [Jaden and Willow] are just as creative," she smiled to British newspaper Metro.

Gotham tells the story of Batman's city in the years before the caped crusader rose to superhero status.

Jada loves working on a TV show, explaining the small screen is the best place for actresses right now.

"Women are beautifully complex, and on TV we have the time to peel back those many layers of a woman that defines her. And so we have all these fantastic characters, like Claire Danes in Homeland and Eva Green as Vanessa Ives in Penny Dreadful - she's probably my favourite character on TV right now," she praised.

Gotham is based on a comic book, something that Jada concedes often appeals to the male population more. Her character is a tough, "ruthless gutter chick," in a male dominated world, which the actress thinks is similar to how the movie business works

"That's life; living in a world of patriarchy yet steeped in strong, formidable women. It's like Hollywood when you think about it," she mused.
